What is up with conspiracy theories regarding the CIA and drugs?

Supposedly the CIA is involved in drug trade all over the world. People claim the CIA supports the drug trade, because this somehow helps our economy. For the life of me, I cannot figure out how importing drugs from other countries could possibly help our economy. If we exported them maybe, but importing drugs will only hurt us in more ways than one. What is the counter argument?

Considering that Oil, Pharmaceuticals and insurance companies make up a large portion of the Dow Jones?
